The Lake Placid High School Sound of the Dragon Marching Band gave family and friends something more than a preview Friday night. They gave them a look at just how much work goes into putting a marching show on the field. The band held its 2026 preview performance Friday evening at the Lake Placid High School Commons, introducing this year’s members and giving those attending an early look at its show, “The Rise of the Dragon.”
Band members demonstrated some of the marching fundamentals they have been working on, showing the precision required to move, stop, turn and maintain spacing while playing. Two students demonstrated just how much concentration and effort goes into marching properly. Then family members and friends got a chance to find out for themselves. They joined their band students for a marching exercise, following instructions and trying some of the same movements the students have spent weeks practicing. It added some fun to the evening, but it also gave parents and supporters a better appreciation for what the students are being asked to do.
Marching band requires musicians to think about far more than the notes in front of them. They have to know where they are on the field, where everyone around them is supposed to be and exactly when the next movement begins — all while continuing to play.
The Dragonettes were also on hand showing the hard work they have put into their performances and the precisioun required for their routines
And there was plenty that sounded like football season. The band played some of the familiar music Dragon fans can expect to hear from the stands at Lake Placid High School football games this fall, giving the audience an early taste of the energy the band will bring on Friday nights. This group is ready.
The first home football game is Friday, September 4 vs North Port. The Green Dragons play at home every Friday through October 2.
