Lake Placid Elks Lodge Closes Following Charter Revocation

Lake Placid Elks Lodge #2661 has closed following the revocation of its charter by the national Elks organization, bringing an end to decades of community involvement. Members were notified that the charter had been revoked by order of National President Timothy F. Jaegar under Executive Order #26-096. The exact reason for the revocation has not been confirmed. However, sources familiar with the situation say the lodge’s charter had been in jeopardy for some time, citing missing tax filings and administrative issues. Florida corporate records also indicate a lapse in annual report filings for 2022 and 2023.

The lodge purchased its property in 1984, and its most recent available tax filing reported 120 members.

A Familiar Part of Lake Placid

For years, the Elks Lodge contributed to the community through charitable activities and fundraising. Its annual backpack event collected school supplies for students, while other fundraising efforts supported the Florida Elks Youth Camp in Umatilla. The lodge was also known for its strawberry shortcake sales at the Caladium Festival and country fair, a familiar tradition for festivalgoers. In announcing the closure, the lodge thanked its members, volunteers and supporters. “We made every effort to keep our Lodge moving forward and to continue serving our community,” the announcement stated.

Supporters had planned ElksFest for October 2 and 3, but the weekend festivities were postponed due to weather concerns. The Lodge went ahead with a steak and seafood dinner Saturday evening, drawing a full house for dinner, live entertainment and raffles. Supporters had hoped the strong turnout would help keep the lodge operating, but those efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.

What Happens Next?

According to Brian Burns, Past State President of the Florida Elks Association, disposition of the lodge property will follow the statutes and rules of the organization. The building is not available for use in the meantime and will be advertised when it becomes available for sale. No timeline has been announced. Members in good standing automatically become members of the Elks Virtual Lodge, allowing them to maintain membership while considering affiliation with another lodge. The lodge also announced that information regarding refunds for ElksFest tickets will be provided when details become available.
