Lake Placid High School’s Homecoming Week begins tomorrow, September 28, with student dress-up days, a bonfire, a downtown parade and a Friday night football game. Downtown businesses are invited to join in through the Paint the Town Green window decorating contest.
The week opens with a bonfire on the LPHS practice field Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. The school has planned a kickball tournament, outdoor games and food trucks, with the bonfire to be lit at 7:30 p.m. Proceeds benefit the Class of 2027. Bonfire Details
Students have dress-up themes throughout the week. Wednesday is class color wars, with teal for seniors, pink for juniors, purple for sophomores and black for freshmen. Friday is green-and-white Dragon Spirit Day.
Downtown joins in
The Town of Lake Placid and 33852 Connect are sponsoring Paint the Town Green, a window decorating contest open to downtown businesses. Participants are invited to decorate in green and white in support of LPHS. Judging begins Thursday, October 1, at 3 p.m. Lake Placid Insider will feature participating businesses throughout the week.
Friday’s parade and game
The Homecoming parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday, October 2, in downtown Lake Placid. Friday night the Green Dragons host DeSoto in the Homecoming football game at 7:30 p.m. The school’s Homecoming dance is scheduled for Saturday, October 3, from 8 to 11 p.m. in the LPHS gym.
A long-standing tradition
Homecoming began more than a century ago as a way to invite former students back to their schools — literally to “come home.” Early college celebrations in the 1900s combined football games with parades, bonfires and school gatherings. The tradition eventually spread to high schools, adding many of the familiar activities still celebrated today. Lake Placid has its own long history of Homecoming celebrations, with generations of Green Dragons taking part in parades, football games, dances and other traditions.
