The first thing visitors notice at Casa Maduro is not the cigars. It is the atmosphere.
Soft lighting, deep green leather club chairs, Cuban-inspired murals and the aroma of premium tobacco create a setting designed for people to settle in rather than hurry through. Time seems to move a little slower. Three words on the front door capture the experience: Savor the Moment.
That was the vision JR Baez and his wife, Jeannie, had when they opened Casa Maduro on July 20.
After more than 25 years with the New York Police Department, JR and Jeannie eventually made Lake Placid their home. In November 2024, the couple opened their first cigar lounge, Sticks with Stones, in Sebring.

When they decided to expand into Lake Placid, they deliberately chose not to duplicate the Sebring location. Instead, they created something distinctive for the community they now call home. Even the details reflect that decision. The green-and-gold club chairs pay tribute to the Lake Placid Green Dragons and Jeannie’s connection to the local schools. Cuban-inspired murals reflect the heritage and craftsmanship associated with premium cigars.
The name itself also carries meaning. In Spanish, maduro means “mature” or “ripe.” In the cigar world, the term refers to tobacco that has undergone an extended fermentation process, creating a darker wrapper and a richer flavor. At Casa Maduro, however, the name represents more than a style of cigar. It also describes an atmosphere built around slowing down, enjoying conversation and appreciating the time and craftsmanship behind a well-made cigar.
That sense of camaraderie is central to the experience. People may arrive with a shared appreciation for cigars, but the setting creates an almost immediate sense of connection and belonging. The lounge welcomes longtime cigar enthusiasts as well as those who are just beginning to explore premium cigars. Staff can help newcomers understand the choices and select a cigar that suits their preferences. Women are equally welcome as part of the Casa Maduro community.
The humidor offers premium cigars at a range of price points, from moderately priced selections to high-end offerings. Guests may also bring their own cigars, with a $10 cutting fee.
Casa Maduro is devoted specifically to the premium cigar experience. Cigarettes and vaping are not included in the lounge setting.
For regular guests, private humidor locker memberships provide secure cigar storage and 24-hour access to the lounge, along with additional membership benefits. Casa Maduro also offers cigar pairings and a loyalty program.

The business is working to obtain a beer and wine license for the Lake Placid location. Future plans may also include live music and other entertainment.
For now, the focus remains simple: creating a comfortable escape where people can sit back, enjoy a quality cigar and good company, and leave the outside world behind for a little while.
